John and Marlena on DOOL

Last month Days of Our Lives was given a reprieve and will be on the air until 2010. Unfortunately, it comes with a price. The producers were told they needed to cut 40% of its costs in able to remain. In doing so, it was announced that the first actors to be cut are John and Marlena. This has created much controversary from the viewers and some very unhappy reactions. I personally wasn’t thrilled by this either, however, I did do some serious thinking on it.
The fans are understandably upset. When reading the December 30th issue of SOD (Soap Opera Digest) I saw a lot of disparaging remarks. They all said that they will no longer be watching DOOL with John and Marlena being written off. In my opinion, this is totally unfair to the show and to all of the other wonderful actors on the show.
Yes, John and Marlena are wonderful, but aren’t their many other actors that are also wonderful? What about Bo and Hope, Steve and Kayla, Abe and Lexie, Chelsie, Max, Phillip, Brady, Kate, Sami, Rafe, Lucas, etc.? If everyone stops watching because one super couple is no longer on, then everyone loses. I’m sorry, but one super couple does not make or break a show! In the past few months just how often have John and Marlena really been on? Maybe once a week or every other week?
In this time of national economic crisis we need to understand that roles are going to be cut. Look at Susan Lucci, who has been a mainstay on AMC for how many years and has agreed to a significant pay cut. From everything I have heard and read, she hasn’t opted to leave or even badmouthed the show.
John and Marlena have been written off before and have made a comeback. Other “super couples” that have been written off include Steve and Kayla along with Doug and Julie. Granted, Doug and Julie only make basically cameo appearances, however they are not forgotten. I do love the fact that Doug (Bill Hayes) and Julie (Susan Seaforth-Hayes) met on the show and married in real life and are still together.
Let’s give DOOL a chance and see how these budget cuts are going to turn out. Hopefully, once the economy is back on track we’ll have our beloved super couple back.
