Posted on 20. Jul, 2009 by patti in GL, Spoilers

Alan, Phillip, and James embark on a camping trip, which ends with a shocking revelation about Alan’s past that leaves Phillip viewing his troubled father in an entirely new light.
The trip represents a chance to go back and repair some of the things that were broken in their relationship from very early on. Phillip admits that as a young boy, it was his father who taught him about bravery. Alan then confesses that he was drafted during the Vietnam war but was so afraid to go that his father, Brandon, arranged for a young man named Gerry to fight in Alan’s place. Alan later found out that the soldier died. Alan has been wracked with overwhelming guilt that continues to this day.
Later, Alan denies any truth to the story. Phillip reaches out to Alexandria, who confirms the story is true and reveals that Alan’s life changed so much that he sends anonymous checks to the soldier’s widow each year. Phillip secretly finds the widow’s address and invites Alan to go on another trip together.
Will Phillip be able to repair the things broken in the family and be able to die with a little peace of mind?
