#DOOL Update: More Axing

Francisco St Martin (Dario) has just tweeted that he has been let go from Days. While I haven’t gotten all fuzzied with Dario, lately he has been growing on me. When I heard that Mark Hapka was coming back, as Nathan, I had high hopes that there could be a mix-up with the two guys and Melanie, just like with Stephanie in the mix.

I was also looking forward to more of Rafe’s family and the ultimate angst. My bet is that Gabi will be the next to go seeing that Will is going to be the nu gay guy with Sonny.

As Carolyn Hinsey would say “it’s only my opinion”.

About 2 weeks ago, Dena Higley was out as head writer on Days. She was replaced by Marlene McPherson and Darrell Ray Thomas, Jr. Darrell was an intern for Days quite some time ago and Marlene was a former writer for Days, so they both are familiar with the show. They both previously co-wrote for Passions, another NBC soap. Obviously with new head writers we can expect changes, however, with demise of AMC and OLTL we are in store for some MAJOR changes!

Executive Producer, Ted Corday, has said that he wants to move
back to a more positive, romantic, intriguing show as opposed to
revenge, drug addiction and prostitution. For that I applaud him. He
also wants to get back to the core families — Meaning the Brady’s
and Hortons. Hurrah! When was the last time we really saw Roman
Brady? How much story have Bo and Hope been given since they
reunited? I am hoping his vision becomes a reality.

It’s going to be till the end of summer thru the fall before we see a
lot of changes. Days tapes well in advance, in fact they have already
taped to mid-August with Higley as the writer.

I named this article “Blood Bath in Salem”. Here is why – last week
it was announced that Crystal Chappell (Carly) and Louise Sorell
(Vivian) have been let go. Yesterday it was announced that Nadia
Bjorlin (Chloe), Tamara Braun (Taylor) and newcomer Bren Foster (Quinn) have been released. Today the blood bath continued when
head producer, Gary Tomlin was let go.

On the plus side, Matthew Ashford will be returning as Jack – Jennifer’s hubby. Rumor has it that Drake Hogestn and Deidre Hall
will be returning as John and Marlena, although for only a short
time. I personally do not think this is a good idea. While John and
Marlena are memorable characters that fans are invested in, if they
are only here for a short time, only to be get written off again, the
fans will be more than irate!

Today it was announced that Mark Hapka will be returning as Nathan Horton. I couldn’t understand him being written off to begin with and
it will be a great triangle with Melanie and Dario.

I would love to see Bryan Dattalio come back as Lucas. They have been mentioning his name a lot on the show.

#DOOL Breaking News: More #Days cast exits

According to Soap Opera Digest, two more cast members from Days are voluntarily leaving the show.

A week after Soap Opera Digest reported the news of Mark Hapka’s (Nathan) ouster from Salem comes word that Shelley Hennig (Stephanie) and Jay Kenneth Johnson (Philip) have both decided to leave the show. “It just feels right,” says Hennig of why she’s taking off after four years. “I have been preparing for this for awhile, so I have said my mental good-byes. I will miss the faces I see here every day, but everybody has been really encouraging and has embraced my decision…. I feel like I’m going out with a bang after last week’s air shows and I feel great about it creatively and I am thankful to the writers for giving me that. I am thankful for this role that DAYS has given me and will miss playing this character. I am forever thankful for the fans and this wonderful gift that was given to me. It’s been a lot of fun to play and I wouldn’t change anything.” Hennig’s last tape date is February 2. As for Johnson, “It feels perfect,” he says. “The story ended and there’s a lot of stuff going on out there. I thought about it a lot; it just felt like the right time. I want to thank the fans for continuing to watch and following me from my first stint to the other shows I’ve done and back to here. #DOOL Nathan Horton is out!

According to Soap Opera Digest Mark Hapka has been let go as Dr. Nathan Horton.

Hapka joined the show in June 2009 and should wrap taping soon.

Since joining the show Hapka’s Nate was romantically involved with Shelley Hennig’s Stephanie Johnson and Molly Burnett’s Melanie Kiriakis.

I am personally very unhappy about this. The fallout from Stephanie’s involvement about the paternity tests switch and Melanie realizing that her husband is Parker’s father could give us months of storyline, with Nathan and Melanie.

We’ve all seen the awesome attraction that Melanie and Nathan have for each other, I just don’t understand Days reasoning for this.

#DOOL: Natalia Livingston joins Days

Daytime Emmy Award winning actress, Natalia Livingston, joins the cast of Days on January 26th. Livingston, (ex Emily/Rebecca on GH) will portray Nicole’s younger sister, Taylor.

Nicole and EJ postpone their upcoming nuptials due to Johnny’s health crisis. When EJ meets Taylor he is immediately smitten – it’s kind of like an “Oh, my God!” moment. Will Taylor be able to humanize EJ?

I can’t wait for Nicole’s reaction. She already has issues with Sami, regarding Sydney and she had to break up with Brady at EJ’s insistence, and now she has to deal with Taylor.

Will Nicole lose the ability to see her “beloved” Sydney?

#Y&R The recast of Abby Newman

Normally when a Soap Opera ages a child or teenager, we haven’t seen that character for awhile – such was the case of Bold and Beautiful’s Hope- we hadn’t seen Hope in years and now this 17 year old new Hope is totally believable.

However, this week the Young and Restless took a totally different tactic. Two weeks ago Abby was in high school,this week March Rylan took on the role of Abby as a twenty-something hell-raising Abby, and I must say that Rylan rocks! Usually it’s hard for both the audience and the actor to engage with a recent recast. However, Rylan has done an excellent job and I’m in excited with the direction the writer’s are taking Abby. She is feisty, knows what she wants and is not afraid to stand up to her father – the “great” Victor Newman. Abby wants to be the new Paris Hilton and have her own reality show. Any issues she has with her family , or anyone, this is her time to air them out on TV and anyone who has ever crossed her had better watch out.

Rylan is not new to being a recast as she previously aired on Guiding Light as the recast of Lizzie Spaulding. She was much younger then and it took some time, at least for me, to embrace her in that role. However, she did eventually make the character her own.

This time it only took one day to make the role of Abby Newman her own and I am thrilled to see where she takes it.

#Y&R Cast Changes: Marcy Rylan joins #Y&R

Victor and Ashley’s daughter, Abby, will experience a major growth spurt when Marcy Rylan takes over the role from Hayley Erin. Abby will be aged to her early 20′s.

Rylan most recently portrayed Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light and will start airing on Y&R the week of May 10th.

I, for one, am absolutely thrilled! I loved Rylan’s performance on GL and am excited to see her again and hope she’ll interact with John Driscoll. Driscoll, Chance on Y&R, played Coop on GL.

Beau Davidson

Beau Davidson, the up-and-coming country star, will be performing his new single, “You’re All I Ever Wanted,” at Whip’s request – and Davidson says the song is a perfect number for a weeding. “It pretty much tells the story that every girl wants to hear and every guy wants to say.”

Whip, trying to express his feelings for Taylor, contacts Davidson and asks him to come help put his feelings for her in a song.

Davidson appears March 30 and April 2.

#DOOL Casting News: Sorkin back to Days

Arleen Sorkin

Arleen Sorkin, who became a fan favorite during her ’80s run as the daffy Calliope Jones, is headed back to Salem this May. At first, the actress thought she was coming back for Alice’s funeral, but this is not the case.

Sorkin is looking forward to being re-teamed with Leann Hunley, Anna, who played her on-screen boss two decades ago.

So far, Sorkin is booked for six shows, and they want to book more.

I’ll be blogging more about Alice’s illness, funeral and the original actors that will be returning in May.

#Y&R Casting News: A new Heather

Eden Riegel

Eden Riegel will be stepping into the role of Heather Stevens on April 20th. Riegel previously played Bianca on All My Children.

Vail Bloom has played Heather since 2007 and left the show on her own accord. Bloom was a non-contract player and had to turn down outside projects in the past. She now wants to be able to pursue other opportunities.
